Smith on weather watch for Himalayan Trail's National bid
by Keith Hamer
SUE SMITH is waiting for the weather to settle down before deciding whether to run Himalayan Trail in the Coral Scottish Grand National on Saturday week.
The nine-year-old is 12-1 with the sponsors to follow up his 22-length victory in the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter last month in the Ayr marathon.
"We're on course just at the minute, but we're reserving judgment until things settle down a bit more with all this adverse weather," said the trainer.
"He does like a bit of cut. But it can go from being ridiculously heavy up there, which it has been all year, to at this time of year going the other way as well.
"I wouldn't want to test him in his first season again over four miles if it was really boggy, bottomless ground.
"I am keeping my options open until a bit nearer the time. If he didn't go to Scotland that would be him for the season.
"Just at this minute we are waiting on the race coming a little bit closer before we make up our minds."
