Radek Stepanek in pre-quarters

Second-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic quelled the challenge of strong-serving Ivan Navarrao Pastor of Spain 6-3 7-6(3) to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the ATP Tour Chennai Open tennis championship here today.
Also making to the pre-quarters was qualifier Michael Berrer of Germany, who maintained his winning streak scalping higher-ranked Lukas Dlouhy (Czech) 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Though Stepanek was the favourite, the Spaniard did not yield easily. Initially, Stepanek, who is looking for his maiden ATP tour title despite finishing 2005 within top 25, had difficulties in adjusting to the surface.
Both Stepanek and Pastor stuck to the basics and avoided unforced errors while largely playing a serve and volley game.
Pastor had to strive to save his service games, mainly coming up with aces and always kept increasing the pace of returns, which often had Stepanek, ranked 19 on the ATP, in two minds.
However, Stepanek's change in game plan, particularly in the second set, to hustle his rival paid off, though Pastor was more intent on keeping the ball in play.
