"Melbourne Cup reflections
Payne mania continues down under after Tuesday’s historic Melbourne Cup when Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win her nation’s biggest race.
Everywhere you looked yesterday the unbelievable story was being relived and the rider’s dream that Tuesday’s win will inspire a generation to dream big looks assured.
Even Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called Payne to congratulate her on her achievement and coverage of the win correctly dominated every paper and news channel on Wednesday.
"It's a great win for the horse, but it's fantastic for a woman jockey to win at the Melbourne Cup for the first time," said Turnbull.
The way Payne spoke from the heart after the race was as enchanting as the win itself and there was no chance she was going to freeze as the world looked on.
Yesterday she fulfilled a number of media commitments with the same enthusiasm, articulating with precision what she hoped the win would achieve for others.
Three-time Cup winner Glen Boss came in for a bit of stick on Thursday after a story appeared in the press this morning with the rider quoted saying Payne had a “bee in her bonnet”.
He wasted no time taking to twitter, claiming his words had been "turned upside down" in the story.
"It's fair to say it still will be a male-dominated sport, that's the way it's been for a long time and the sooner people get their heads around that the better," he said, according to the report.
Boss is adamant he supported the win but those comments had been ignored by the reporter and things got pretty ugly as he launched a twitter attack on the author. The tweets have since been taken down, although looking back to Tuesday, Boss seemed as thrilled as anyone with the result and tweeted accordingly."
