West Ham vs. Bolton
Upton Park
06/03/10
16:00
Preview!
After what seems an eternity since Manchester United beat us up at Old Trafford, West Ham finally get their Premier League show back on the road with a visit from fellow strugglers, Bolton Wanderers. We say fellow strugglers, even though we`ve climbed a few places, because with two tough away games to come (Chelsea and Arsenal), it`s essential that we make it three home wins on the trot by beating Owen Coyle`s side.
With Kevin Davies tipped by us to become a major threat, we shouldn`t ignore the merits of a certain Johan Elmander. The Swedish striker scored for his nation, in midweek, and after having cost £10 million he finally feels that he`s ready, after eighteen months with the club, to deliver the goods, remarking,
"There was pressure after the fee but I`ve adapted and goals will come now."
Not this Saturday though mate, not this Saturday!
West Ham Team News:
West Ham enter this fixture still with a few casualties. Zavon Hines, Herita Ilunga, Calum Davenport and Luis Boa Morte are still unavailable but the squad is boosted by the return of Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer. Whether either will feature remains to be seen. Also hoping to feature, after missing the previously mentioned game; is Scott Parker, although Scott will be wary that he`s only one yellow card away from an automatic two game ban.
Rumours persist that Gianfranco Zola will opt for the same starting eleven that beat Hull City the last time we played at Upton Park. Who are we to argue?
Player to watch: Carlton Cole
Fresh from his five minutes of match time, for England, the Upton Park faithful will be hoping that Carlton can continue his fine form and get back amongst the goals that would help West Ham see off the challenge of Bolton and move closer to that mythical forty point mark that is supposed to signify survival.
Bolton Team News:
Owen Coyle brings Bolton to East London with a raft of injuries. In midweek their American international joined a growing list after suffering a fractured leg whilst on international duty and joins Basham, M.Davies, Davis, J O`Brien, Cahill and McCann as not being available.
Worrying times for a Bolton side struggling for form!
Player to watch: Kevin Davies
An ageing but very effective target man who continues to scare the life out of opposition defences. I can`t help wondering if he`d have got far more recognition player for a higher profile club.
Match Facts & Stats
The statistics show that, overall, Bolton have the upper hand in league fixtures between the two sides. In 64 previous meetings Bolton have recorded 32 victories against the 22 to our name, with 10 having ended all square.
But, statistics can lie as we all know!
If we look at recent encounters between the two you`d be a little fearful considering Bolton have won their last 5 meetings with West Ham.
But perhaps that can be counter-balanced with the information that the current Bolton side have not won away from home in the last ten attempts and haven`t scored in their last four.
The most recent meeting between the two sides saw Bolton emerge victorious, at the Reebok, with goals from Lee, Klasnic and Cahill eclipsing one from Diamanti.
Ref Watch:
Lee Probert is the official appointed for this fixture.
Match Prediction:
It`s got to be a home win! Despite luring Owen Coyle from Burnley, Bolton have struggled to show any significant improvement in form whereas West Ham have produced to vibrant performances in their last two home fixtures. It may be tighter than we`d like and there may only be the odd goal in it but I`m going for a West Ham win, by the odd goal in three!
Next Fixtures:
If I`m not mistaken it`s a trip to Stamford Bridge next up for West Ham and a chance to further dent their title hopes, now wouldn`t that be nice!
Facciamo 2-0, 2-1 per Zola e tutti felici?

Portsmouth - Birmingham
Revenge time for Birmingham after the loss in the last game. F. Piquionne destroyed the Birmingham boys with 2 goals in a short space of 3 minutes. Portsmouth were not really the better side more likely the luckier team of the two.
Birmingham misses Carsley, J. McFadden & Tainio while the home side will be w/o the services of Boateng, Mokena, Smioth & Borre. Still rock bottom of the EPL and looks pretty set for Championship soccer next season.
Birmingham might not have the best away record and obviously not comparable to their hime record, but still a 9th place team against rock bottom dewellers. Still the best result to the Birmingham team victory is only one goal wins and i will not go against this trend of theirs. Sitting on goal leads, thanks to the last FA Cup win, away win is good value imo.
Selection: Birmingham to Win
Odds: 3.28 @ Pinnacle

Sunderland vs. Bolton Wanderers

Preview!
The clash of the titans! Well, hardly but this game could not get any bigger for Sunderland. 14 league games without a victory, teams below and around getting points and American owners getting nervous.
Sunderland have been playing better in defence with the solid performances from Mensah but we need some magic up front on Tuesday.
Bolton have been on a goo run of form but they are still heavily involved in a relegation fight and with a good display from Steve Bruce's men they could drop lower as Sunderland look to jump above them.
This game is vital not just for league positioning but also for all nervous Sunderland fans deciding whether or not to renew their season ticket application.
Haway lads let's have something to sing about and build on for the last 9 games of the season!
Steve Bruce on the new owner: 'What the owner has done in the last 12 months is nothing short of incredible. It's fantastic support,' Bruce said.
'We all in football want an owner and a chairman like I have got, and it's not been easy for any of us.
'But when you are in it and you are in a bad run, that's when you need the support of your owner and your chairman and I have to say, the pair of them have been fantastic.
'I have to give them something, and especially the owner. What he has done for this club in the short period of time he has been here is fantastic.
'He does everything properly. He doesn't go shouting and bawling in the newspapers, and fair play to him.'
Bruce continued: 'We must try to get to 38, 40 points - that way, then you will be safe, I am pretty convinced about that.
'This season has been unbelievable, but usually, it's enough. Last year, 35 was enough, but this year, I am looking at 38 hopefully being enough.
'If somebody had told be we wouldn't win a game in winter, I would have said they were crazy, but that's where we find ourselves.
'We had the best start in 35 years, and we haven't won a game for three months.
'That's there for everybody to see, but it's how we keep responding.
'You can just lie down and go away, or you can keep trying to do what you believe in and I am still convinced we can be okay.'
Sunderland Team News:
Sunderland are slowly getting back to full fitness and could hope for the same back five as they played in the 0-0 draw against Fulham. Richardson and Cattermole have been rated doubtful on other sites but they should be able to make it for this massive clash at the bottom.
Reid and Henderson were touted for a place on the bench but they should be back next weekend.
Player to watch: Steed Malbranque
We seem to have got back to basics in defence with a clean sheet in our last game but the major problem is creativity in midfield. Steed has had a poor season but with a small break from the first team and with his magic he could unlock the Bolton defence.
Bolton Wanderers Team News:
Bolton will be without the suspended Cohen after his two yellow cards in their victory against West Ham.
Player to watch: Kevin Davies
He loves scoring against West Ham and he will be in a confident mood as he travels to Wearside tomorrow evening. He is the main threat up front with his no nonsense style and arial ability.
Sunderland will need to be in top form to keep a clean sheet but in John Mensah we trust!
Match Facts & Stats
Sunderland have failed to win at all in 2010
Bolton's top goalscorer is Gary Cahill with 7 in total.
Ref Watch:
Referee: Alan Wiley Assistant referees: Andy Newbold & Andy Garratt Fourth official: Howard Webb
Match Prediction:
Sunderland 1 - 0 Bolton I am going to stick my neck out and go for a win with a clean sheet. We need a win and I do not care how it happens!
Preview redatta in casa Sunderland. Vorrebbero vincere.

E poi adesso è messa abbastanza bene in classifica....

Liverpool play host to Barclays Premier League bottom club Portsmouth at Anfield tonight.
The Reds will be determied to return to winning ways in the league and get their top four push back on track after the setback against Wigan as well as the Europa League loss in Lille.
Pompey have already inflicted defeat upon Rafael Benitez's side this season - winning 2-0 at Fratton Park in December.
However, the south-coast club have not tasted victory at Anfield since 1951 and in last season's corresponding fixture, Steven Gerrard's second-half penalty put them to the sword in front of the Kop.
The opposition
Portsmouth arrive at Anfield rooted to the bottom of the Barclays Premier League table.
The Fratton Park side are eight points adrift of safety and their well-documented off-the-field problems mean they face a real uphill task if they're to preserve their top-flight status.
They have won just one of their last 10 league fixtures since defeating Liverpool 2-0 at home in December.
However, there was some cheer for the Pompey faithful last week as Avram Grant's contingent reached the semi finals of the FA Cup, where they will face either Fulham or Tottenham.
In fact, Portsmouth have enjoyed more wins in cup competitions than in the league so far this season.
Ahead of the trip to Merseyside, boss Grant said: "It's never a good time to play Liverpool. They're a very good team with very good players.
"Their squad is full of top, top players and it's never easy to play them - especially at Anfield.
"We beat them earlier in the season at Fratton Park and it will be difficult to beat them again but we will try."
The danger man
Front man Frederic Piquionne is Portsmouth's top goalscorer so far this season having bagged 10 goals in all competitions.
One of those came in Pompey's triumph over the Reds, with his crisp turn and volley sealing a 2-0 win for the south-coast club - and it was the one-time French international's brace that fired Avarm Grant's side into the FA Cup semi finals at Birmingham's expense.
Piquionne is on a season-long loan from Lyon, and the powerful 31-year-old will need to be closely monitored by the Reds' rearguard.
Match stats
Liverpool have won six and drawn five of the last 11 league meetings on this ground.
There have been four hat-tricks scored by Liverpool against Portsmouth in league games. The last was by Jack Balmer in November 1946 in a 3-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool's biggest ever win at Anfield against Pompey is the 8-2 victory in October 1927 which came in their first meeting.
The Reds have lost just two of the last 12 league meetings home and away and only three of the last 17.
Liverpool have scored 33 goals in 14 league games at Anfield this season. At the same stage in 2008-09 they had recorded 22.
The Reds are also two points better off at home this season than at the same time last term.
They have scored in 25 successive league games at home. The last team to prevent the Reds from finding the net at Anfield were West Ham in December 2008.
Dirk Kuyt has featured in every league game for the Reds since April 2008 - an unbroken sequence of 69 matches.
Portsmouth, back in December, were the last team to score more than once in the league against Liverpool.
Pompey are looking to record the league 'double' over Liverpool for the first since 1947-48. The other was in 1931-32.
The Reds will be determied to return to winning ways in the league and get their top four push back on track after the setback against Wigan as well as the Europa League loss in Lille.
