Hull City vs. Chelsea
Preview
Table-topping Chelsea travel to Humberside this Tuesday evening to play their game in hand over their title rivals, and possibly extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points over Manchester United, and eight points over Arsenal.
At the other end of the table, Phil Brown's side have slipped to 19th, however a win tomorrow would see them catapult up to 14th, such is the room for manoeuvre at the bottom.
As much as you may have tried, you wouldn't have been able to escape the national furore that has been created over John Terry's extra-marital dalliances. Despite the media circus surrounding our skipper, JT rose above it, and the Burnley defence, to head a late winner at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Speaking about his match-winning captain after the weekend result, manager Carlo Ancelotti commented,
'There is no discussion about this (his Chelsea captaincy). He is captain and he will be captain. The players never lose their trust in him.'
'[It is] not only the players, the manager and all the club supports him and his family. I didn't speak with him because yesterday he did a very good training session, it wasn't necessary to speak with him. He is a professional and focused on his work.'
Moving on to tomorrow's opponents, Ancelotti remarked,
'Hull are very able on the long ball, on the head, and we have to pay attention to set-pieces, but we want to do our game.'
'It is no problem to play this game before Arsenal, now we are in a good moment and the players are fit, so it is not bad to continue to play when you are in a good moment, the momentum is very good.'
'The Arsenal game is some days away, we want to prepare every game like a final because every game is very important and we have time after to think about the next game against Arsenal. We have to stay focused against Hull because if we are not we can have a problem.'
Hull City Team News:
Hull, like visitors Chelsea, have returning African players to consider selecting, with Phil Brown contemplating whether to include Seyi Olofinjana in his side.
Jimmy Bullard is a doubt to return from his troublesome knee injury, while Kamel Ghilas (thigh), Dean Marney (calf) and Kamil Zayatte (ankle) are also all doubtful. Ian Ashbee is definitely out with a knee injury.
Player to watch: Stephen Hunt
Hunt is sure to be treated to his usual barracking from the travelling support, after his assault on Petr Cech, at the Madjeski, whilst a Reading player in October 2006.
For the Tigers, Hunt has been their top scorer this campaign, with six goals to his name, including a penalty in their weekend draw with Wolves.
Chelsea Team News:
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti could call upon the returning Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, who arrived back in London in the middle of last week from the African Nations Cup. Both didn't travel up to Lancashire for the weekend clash with Burnley, however are expected to make some kind of return tomorrow.
Long-term injury absentee Jose Bosingwa continues his rehabilitation, however won't make this one. Neither will Juliano Belletti (calf) or Michael Essien (knee).
With this being our second game in four days, rotation could well be the name of the game for Ancelotti. There will also be interest in what the Italian does with his formation, with the return of top-scorer Drogba to the frontline. Here at Vital Chelsea, we'd imagine it'll be a return to the 4-diamond-2 system, looking as follows:
Cech - Ivanovic, Terry, Carvalho, A.Cole - Deco, Ballack, Lampard, J.Cole - Anelka, Drogba
Player to watch: Didier Drogba
If the Ivorian returns to the staring line-up, all eyes will be on him to make up for lost time and continue the rich vein of form he had before the turn of the year. Despite a largely disappointing African Nations Cup campaign, the striker will be hoping to net, with one more goal bringing his tally for the season to twenty in all competitions.
Match Facts & Stats
The hosts are without a win in their last nine matches, whilst Chelsea have won their last four in the league, and are unbeaten in eight.
In the reverse fixture, on the opening day of this season, the Blues trimuphed 2-1, with a late winner from Drogba in front of the Shed.
In this fixture last season, Luiz Felipe Scolari's Blues triumphed 3-0, with goals from Lampard, Anelka and Malouda however, in the return at Stamford Bridge in February, a resilient Tigers display brought about a 0-0 draw, which saw the end of Big Phil in SW6.
Hull have won only four times all season, however all their victories have come at home, whilst Chelsea have dropped 13 points on the road under the Ancelotti regime.
The last time the Tigers beat Chelsea was in a 3-0 victory at Boothferry Park in October 1988.
Ref Watch:
The man with the whistle for this Tuesday evening clash is Mark Clattenburg. This season he's dished out 71 bookings and four red cards.
Match Prediction:
This game in hand is crucial in opening up some vital breathing space over our chasing title rivals. With Drogba back from Angola, you'd expect us to be firing on all cylinders up on Humberside, to move four points clear of United at the top of the pile. It's likely to be tough and hard-fought, a bit like Burnley on Saturday, but hopefully Ancelotti's boys can come through; 3-1.
Next Fixtures:
Next up for Ancelotti's boys is a title clash with Arsenal, at the Bridge on Sunday. A win at the KC tomorrow evening, and victory over Wenger's side on Sunday will see us extend our lead over the Gunners at the top of the table to a staggering eleven points.
Ora dovete solo decidere cosa giocarvi...mica posso pensare a tutto io

Hull vs Chelsea

Ciao a tutti!

Fulham vs. Portsmouth
Craven Cottage
03/02/10
20:45
Preview!
Fulham, after five Premier League games without a victory, have the ideal chance to pick up three points this Wednesday when beleaguered Portsmouth visit Fratton Park. The fixture is, off course, the re-arranged date after the original succumbed to the ice-age that swept across England recently!
Portsmouth are in a strange position and have the sympathy of most other Premier League supporters who might utter that eternal phrase - but for the grace of god………..
Avram Grant is being reported as considering his future due to a string of broken promises but the Israeli seems content to stay and fight for the cause, remarking,
"I am here with the team and as long as I am here I will do my best. My future is not the issue."
After tomorrow night, we wish him well!
Fulham Team News:
Roy Hodgson will still be without long term injury victims John Pantsil and Clint Dempsey and it`s highly unlikely that Paul Konchesky, Andrew Johnson and Simon Davies will be available for selection either. Joining them on the sidelines is Zoltan Gera who picked up a knee knock in training.
The long injury list means that Roy Hodgson may be inclined to give debuts to his new signings Nicky Shorey and Stefano Okaka.
It`ll be interesting who Roy decides to partner with Brede Hangeland at the back. Does he stick with Chris Smalling or does he pull Aaron Hughes back from right-back. Also available, after the completion of the African Cup of Nations, is Dickson Etuhu but, once again, this may be a fixture too soon.
Putting our heads above the parapet though, we have a suspicion that Roy might go with the following:-
Schwarzer, Kelly, Hangeland, Hughes, Shorey, Duff, Murphy, Greening, Riise, Zamora, Okaka.
Player to watch: Bobby Zamora
He`s been back in the fold now for a couple of games after his recent injury and Bobby will be looking to regain that scoring streak that saw his name and that of the national side often mentioned in the same sentence.
Portsmouth Team News:
Avram Grant is a man doing a job under extreme pressure, the behind the scenes pressures must be immense and I`d imagine he`s glad that the transfer window has finally passed enabling him to size up just who is left to form his squad. One deadline day departure saw Asmir Begovic leave Fratton Park for Stoke City leaving the keeping duties back in the hands of David James.
Also missing will be Younes Kaboul who was flogged to Spurs recently. However, with the transfer embargo lifted and with Portsmouth able to sign out of contract and loan players there could be a couple of new faces arriving shortly.
Injured and definitely out are Brown and Diop whilst doubts also exist about Belhadj, Kanu and Yebda who have all recently returned from African Cup of Nations duty!
Player to watch: John Utaka
Watched him have a decent game in Portsmouth`s recent fixture with Manchester City. Looks to have decent pace and his direct play could trouble us!
Match Facts & Stats
In the record books, it`s Pompey that hold the upper hand with 23 wins to the 13 of Fulham with 18 having been drawn.
Recently though Fulham have the upper hand with 3 wins and 1 draw in the last four meetings.
Ref Watch:
The man in charge will be Anthony Taylor.
Match Prediction:
Portsmouth are routed to the bottom of the table, they`re a club that the tabloids are describing as living from day to day, their best players have been sold, they`re the only club we`ve beaten away from home this season, so does common sense tell you that the three points are ours there for the taking! The only problem being is that this great game of ours can be so unpredictable! Nevertheless, this one has got home win written all over it although it could be harder than anticipated!
Next Fixtures:
Next up in our Premier League campaign is a trip to Burnley this weekend.
