NEW YORK – Danny Ainge once told Boston Celtics patriarch Red Auerbach he should have traded Larry Bird while the Hall of Fame forward still had value at the end of his career. Years later, Ainge listened to his own advice.
The Celtics general manager broke up the remaining core pieces of the franchise's most recent championship team by agreeing in principle to a blockbuster trade that will send Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets.

In return, the Celtics will acquire valuable draft picks and millions of dollars in payroll flexibility to begin their rebuilding process. Earlier in the week, Ainge acquired the Los Angeles Clippers' 2015 pick in return for releasing Doc Rivers from his coaching contract.
That was enough to make the Celtics one of draft night's biggest winners. The Garnett-Pierce trade, which also will send Jason Terry to the Nets, will land the Celtics three first-round picks (2014, '16 and '18) and the right to swap first-round picks with the Nets in 2017 – along with Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph and the expiring deal of Kris Humphries.
Boston now has two first-round picks, including its own, in a stellar 2014 draft that will possibly be led by coveted Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins.
Rajon Rondo is now clearly the Celtics' franchise player, but Boston won't have much reason to rush him back from knee surgery in what will be a rebuilding year. Armed with more draft picks and eventual cap room, Boston now hopes the rebuilding process won't take as long.
Among the biggest losers on draft night? One could make a case for the other team in the evening's big trade.
Yes, the Nets added Garnett and Pierce to play with guards Deron Williams and Joe Johnson and center Brook Lopez. But Garnett and Pierce are at the end of their careers, which puts heavy pressure on rookie NBA head coach Jason Kidd to produce a title contender immediately. Brooklyn faces a luxury-tax bill of nearly $80 million and will have a payroll close to $100 million.
Even with the upgrades, Brooklyn isn't a lock to be a top-three team in the Eastern Conference. The Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers and the Chicago Bulls (with a healthy Derrick Rose) should all be formidable.
The Nets did win by temporarily stealing some of the NBA spotlight from the New York Knicks.

NEW YORK — The Cleveland Cavaliers surprised the NBA world by selecting UNLV forward Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft on Thursday, capping several days of swirling speculation about the direction owner Dan Gilbert's franchise would go by choosing a talented scoring prospect that few had projected to go off the board first overall.
"I'm speechless right now," Bennett beamed to ESPN's Shane Battier after his selection. "I don't even know what to say."
Neither did the crowd in attendance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, who reacted with what might fairly be described as shock.
Bennett starred as a freshman in the Mountain West Conference, averaging 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for coach Dave Rice and establishing himself as one of the most productive forwards in the NCAA. How he'll slot in defensively alongside frontcourt mates Anderson Varejao and Tristan Thompson remains to be seen — Bennett was cited by the DraftExpress analysis team of Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz as a player who often jogged on D, relaxed in his defensive stance, exercised poor fundamentals and seemed to be in less-than-prime condition — but his finishing ability around the rim and outside stroke (37.5 percent from 3-point range in his lone seaso

I Celtics dovrebbero aver preso il n.53 Colton Iverson (Indiana) in cambio di cash (ora sono pieni come uova )

I Sixers sono ormai un passo da prendere l'oggetto del desiderio di questo draft, che però alla fine non è stato classificato come si pensava: Nerlens Noel dovrebbe andare a Philadelphia mentre Jrue Holiday va a New Orleans.
Oltre a questo, i Pelicans riceveranno il "firtst round pick 2014" dei Sixers e Pierre Jackson (n.42 attuale).

New Orleans è stata penalizzata, nel recente passato, da scelte non proprio azzeccate. Vedremo se stavolta hanno avuto buon fiuto.
Jrue Holiday, 23 anni, ha disputato un buonissimo campionato con 17.7 punti di media e 8 ast..
Nerlens Noel è un centro che deve ancora dimostrare molte cose. Quanto fatto con Kentucky poco ha che vedere con la nba per un ruolo che molto spesso trova enormi difficoltà al cambio di categoria. E soprattutto difficoltà per guai fisici.
E proprio Noel non ha giocato da Natale 2012 per un problema serio ad un ginocchio.
Un nuovo Hibbert? I Sixers ne avrebbero davvero bisogno.

Se può dare maggiore fiducia ai Sixers, il n.6 del draft 1978 fu un "certo" Larry Bird.

Questa scelta mi piace da impazzire: i Celtics hanno preso il canadese Kelly Olynyk, 22 anni e tre stagioni con Gonzaga delle quali l'ultima è stata esplosiva: 17.8 pts e 7reb avg con 62.9% dal campo. 13ma scelta del draft per Dallas, i C's hanno dato in cambio Lucas Nogueira (16ma scelta) e due futuri second-round picks.
Olynyk nell'ultimo anno al college si è rafforzato molto fisicamente e spero troverà a Boston il modo per farsi apprezzare come merita.

L'affare migliore mi sembra l'abbiano fatto i Pelicans con l'inserimento nel proprio roster di Jrue Holiday.

I Warriors sono in trattativa con Brian Scalabrine per affiancarlo a Mark Jackson quale assistant-coach. Mike Malone è andato a Sacramento come head-coach mentre Bob Beyer andrà come a.c. con i Bobcats. Quindi Golden State è alla ricerca di sostituti.

A proposito di Bobcats, non mi sembra abbiano molto da esultare i loro fans per l'arrivo di Cody Zeller. Secondo me è il classico buon giocatore da college-hoops ma poco adatto per la nba.

Sembra deciso, e se lo è non si dovrà aspettare martedì: Dwight Howard va a Houston.
Mitch Kupchak ha detto che D'Antoni resta e questo rafforza quanto detto, dal momento che mai Howard si è trovato bene con gli schemi del coach. Inoltre Kurt Rambis sarà il "secondo" di D'Antoni e anche lui è propenso a fare a meno dei "Superman".
E infine, ma non meno importante per questa decisione, c'è la poca fiducia che ha Kobe Bryant per l'apporto che può dare Howard alla squadra.

Ci sono pure voci che vorrebbero Dwight Howard a Dallas, ma allo stesso tempo parlano di Rajon Rondo pure in procinto di andare con i Mavericks. Le due cose assieme sembrano impossibili, visti i costi.
I Celtics, è ormai chiaro, vogliono solo ricostruire dalle fondamenta la squadra, cosa che richiederà linfa fresca e quasi niente di "antico". Quindi anche un ventilato scambio Rondo-Nowitzky sembra poco credibile.

Bargnani ai Knicks Che bello, ora, in piena maturità, "Il Mago" dovrà dare il meglio con una squadra che vuole a tutti i costi emergere nei piani alti della nba.
In cambio vanno a Toronto Steve Novak e Marcus Camby più il first pick 2016. Non si sa se sia corso anche denaro.

Per Belinelli al momento non ci sono novità.
Sono iniziate le trattative per i free-agents e troppa carne al fuoco per dire quali siano notizie attendibili o meno.

E' rispuntato il nome di Greg Oden, lo sfortunato "omone per antonomasia" che il 5 dicembre 2009 vide interrotta una promettente carriera, interruzione durata ben tre anni e mezzo.
Sembra che il n.1 del draft 2007 sia riuscito a sistemare i suoi ginocchi e che molte squadre si siano messe sulle sue tracce. Spero che tutto si risolva per il meglio per Oden.
