E allllllorrrrrrrraaaaaaa...... cominciavo a preoccuparmi..... :D

SESSO .......

Keys to winning the 2004 World Series
By Chris Ruddick, MLB Contributing Editor

(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox dismissed some of their ghosts on Wednesday when they became the first team in major league history to come back from a 3-0 deficit in overtaking the New York Yankees to advance to their 10th World Series and first since losing to the New York Mets in 1986.

However, despite their win over the Yankees, the "Curse of the Bambino" still hangs over their heads and won't be truly over until they capture their first title since 1918.

In addition to the Yankees, another team that has been a thorn in the side of Red Sox fans during this 86-year drought is the team that will be across the field on Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals.

St. Louis, which clinched its 16th National League pennant on Thursday when the Cardinals defeated the Houston Astros. St. Louis has defeated the Red Sox twice in the Series already (1946, 1967), but needed a Game 7 each time.

The Cardinals will be shooting for their 10th World Series title, while the Red Sox will be going for their sixth.

Boston is managed by Terry Francona, who will be participating in his first Fall Classic. St. Louis, meanwhile, is skippered by Tony La Russa, who will be appearing in his fourth World Series. He won in 1989 while with the Oakland Athletics.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the keys for each team heading into the World Series.

BOSTON RED SOX

1 - CURT SCHILLING

Francona has said that Curt Schilling will start Game Two for the Red Sox. How much he can give them will go a long way in determining the outcome of this series, though.

After posting a league-high 21 wins in the regular season and a dominant outing against the Anaheim Angels in the ALDS, Schilling was rocked by the Yankees in Game One of the ALCS. It came out after the game that Schilling was pitching with a dislocated tendon in his right ankle that will need offseason surgery. It was believed his season was over.

But, low and behold, like Willis Reed for the New York Knicks in the 1970 NBA Finals, Schilling returned to the hill in Game Six to toss an absolute gem after some makeshift surgery. Schilling underwent a unique suturing process on Monday in which the skin around the dislocated tendon was cut and stitched tighter.

His sutured ankle bled slightly, tinting his sock red, but he went on to pitch one of the great games in postseason history, as he allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings while striking out four and throwing 99 pitches.

"It's all right," said Schilling of his injured ankle. "I became a Christian seven years ago and I've never been touched by God like I was tonight."

If Schilling is not right he will get rocked by a powerful St. Louis lineup, as the Yankees proved in the first game of the ALCS. Adrenaline and emotion should take over, though, and he will be his usual self.

He will also have the added advantage of pitching in Fenway, where he will not have to bat.

2 - GET MANNY AND DAMON ON TRACK

It is unbelievable to think that the Red Sox advanced past the Yankees with Manny Ramirez not having a single run batted in the series. The 32-year- old leftfielder also had a big goose egg in the HR column.

Ramirez drove in 130 runs during the season with 43 homers. However, in his 10 postseason games Ramirez has just one RBI with no home runs.

David Ortiz more than picked up Ramirez' slack in the ALCS, but he is bound to slow down and the Sox will need more from Ramirez.

Another player that has to get back on track is leadoff hitter Johnny Damon, who was 3-for-29 in the first six games of the ALCS, before exploding for two home runs, including a second inning grand slam, and six RBI in the clinching contest.

"Look at the year he had," said Francona. "I understand he's not going to win the MVP but actually the last couple of weeks of the season, he's got to be in the top handful of guys when you're a lead-off hitter and you've got 94 RBIs and 20 home runs and all year leading the league in runs, that's a special year. He's a good, good player. We just tried to remind him of that."

Damon and Ramirez have to set the table for Ortiz if the Red Sox hope to win.

3 - D-LOWE

Derek Lowe pitched so well in the ALCS that Francona has named him his Game Four starter. Lowe, who was almost left off the postseason roster because of his ineffectiveness down the stretch, was brilliant in Game Four, then was even better in picking up the win in the deciding game.

On just two days' rest the 31-year-old righthander, who will be a free agent at season's end, limited the mighty Yanks' bats to just one hit and one run over six scoreless innings.

Which starter will Boston get, though? Will it be the guy who was brilliant in the ALCS or the guy who was winless over his last five regular season outings.

"It's kind of easy," said Francona. "Derek threw the ball so well and so efficiently, and Bronson (Arroyo) bounced back so well out of the bullpen. He was so effective. It's not the idea that he can't start, because he's a good starter. But he may give our bullpen just a huge, extra right-handed arm that might get us over the edge."

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

1 - MAKE SCHILLING WORK

No matter how touched by God Curt Schilling says he is, he is not at 100- percent. St. Louis should take every advantage of that - something the Yankees did not do.

Instead, the Yankees swung at the first pitch time and again, letting Schilling off the hook. The powerful righthander only had to test the ankle once on a groundout to first base and struggled getting to the bag.

St. Louis should waste little time in laying down a bunt to see just how effective Schilling will be at getting off the mound.

2 - LA RUSSA

Ok. who would you rather have managing your team in a big spot? Francona, who up until three weeks ago never managed a postseason game, or La Russa, who has been to more World Series than his counterpart has won postseason series.

Francona has been second-guessed on just about every move he makes in Beantown. He has gotten lucky, though, as his team became the first in major league history to rebound from a 3-0 deficit.

La Russa, on the other hand, has long been recognized as one of the game's best strategists and game technicians, which should give the Cardinals a decided advantage in close games.

However, La Russa, at times, seems to think too much and has a tendency to overmanage. Will this come back and hurt the Cards in a big spot? We will see.

3 - PUJOLS

With the exception of someone named Bonds, Albert Pujols is arguably the best player in the game. Since this postseason has started he has become the driving force behind the Cardinals run, driving in every run and seemingly always coming through in the clutch, as he captured NLCS MVP honors.

Through 11 games this postseason the 2001 NL Rookie of the Year is hitting .442 with six homers and 14 RBI. He hit .500 in the NLCS with four homers and 10 runs scored. All this after hitting .331 in the regular season with 46 home runs and 123 RBI.

"I've always asked him to introduce me to the person who taught him how to play the game," La Russa said.

Will he be able to maintain his torrid pace? How he performs on the game's biggest stage will go a long way in determining the outcome of this series. I have a feeling America is about to be introduced to Albert Pujols.

Occhio a Ramirez che è ancora all'asciutto.......

Quando me nè ricordai ormai era troppo tardi.

Miiiiiiiiii stanotte che potevo..............non si gioca....

Oh fate i bravi domani, mi raccomando......peccatoriiiiiiiiiii :D
