Master Minded eases to victory in the Champion Chase
by Ben Newton
MASTER MINDED, Britain's top-rated chaser following his brilliant Queen Mother Champion Chase victory, may make a surprise appearance at Aintree next week, where it looks increasingly likely he will be joined by Gold Cup runner-up Kauto Star.
Master Minded's trainer Paul Nicholls was considering the Kerrygold Champion Chase at Punchestown next month as the next possible target for his brilliant five-year-old, who earned an official rating of 186 – higher than stablemates Denman and Kauto Star – when slamming Voy Por Ustedes by 19 lengths at Cheltenham.
However, following a meeting with owner Clive Smith yesterday, it was decided that Master Minded would be entered for the £200,000 Grade 1 John Smith's Melling Chase over 2m4f a week tomorrow, with Kauto Star to be entered for both that race and the Totesport Bowl over 3m1f on Thursday.
Nicholls said: “We have decided to enter Master Minded for the Melling Chase next Friday and he could well run, provided the ground is suitable and he pleases me in his work on Saturday.
“Kauto Star will be entered in both the Melling Chase and the Totesport Bowl on Thursday. If he went to Aintree I had been favouring the shorter race, as I didn't want him to be subjected to a slog so soon after the Gold Cup. But at this stage it looks like being goodish ground at Aintree, and there may not be too many runners in the Bowl, so it makes sense to look at that option as well, especially as he's come out of the Gold Cup in A1 condition.
“I'll also be entering Gungadu, who has the Topham Chase as an alternative, as well as Turko, who's also in the National.â€

GOING;
SHOWERY rain fell at Aintree on Saturday morning, but the ground was unchanged as officials at the course prepared for the 2008 John Smith's Grand National meeting that starts onThursday.
Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch was expecting more rain overnight into this morning, with perhaps another 3-4mm falling on Monday and Tuesday, but the weather forecast then indicates a warmer spell leading up to the fixtures opening card.
Tulloch said on Saturday afternoon: "We had a 9mm in total on Friday, plus a little more in the form of showers this morning, and the ground on the National course remains good to soft, soft in places.
"On the Mildmay course it's good to soft,good in places, and the forecast is for rising temperatures as the week progresses."
Tulloch added: "We're told that we might get 3-4mm of rain on Monday and Tuesday, but that any rain is likely to be showery, rather than in prolonged bands over the next couple of days, before the weather turns brighter and warmer by midweek."
