Rhinestone Cowboy
Messaggioda gattosornione » 11/03/2003 - 11:47
Saluti a tutti. gattosornione

ora magari faccio qlc copia incolla

Rhinestone Cowboy has look of champion
By Rob Wright
RHINESTONE COWBOY, so impressive on all four starts over jumps, can complete his rise to the top by winning the Smurfit Champion Hurdle (3.15) at Cheltenham today.
A top-class bumper performer last season, he was arguably unlucky when suffering his only reverse behind Pizarro here 12 months ago, being bumped twice by the winner on the climb to the line. Since switching to hurdles, Jonjo O’Neill’s charge has never been in danger of defeat. Victories at Newbury, Cheltenham, Wetherby and Wincanton have all been gained with his rider, Norman Williamson, sitting virtually motionless.
On the first three of those wins he beat little and it was easy to question how much there was left in the tank. The grade two Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton, however, was a different matter. Although last year’s champion, Hors La Loi III, was below his best in a well-beaten third, the way Rhinestone Cowboy cruised alongside the high-class novice, Thisthatandtother, oozed class and, more importantly, when Williamson gave a gentle nudge, he powered away in effortless fashion.
History suggests that lack of experience is no bar to success in this race if the ability is there, as three of the past ten winners — Royal Gait, Alderbrook and Make A Stand — were novices. Usually a fluent jumper, Rhinestone Cowboy has twice made slight mistakes at the business end of his races, but the fact that there is only one hurdle in the final three furlongs of this contest makes that less of a concern.
If there is an outstanding runner in this line-up, it is surely Rhinestone Cowboy, and his connections can be rewarded for their boldness in bringing him here rather than taking the softer option of the opening Supreme Novices Hurdle.
The betting suggests that his main rival could come from within his own stable, but while Intersky Falcon has shown tremendous improvement in the past year, he had a tough race when beating Santenay by three lengths at Kempton last time and has yet to prove that he is fully effective on an undulating track like this.
A greater threat may come from Flame Creek. Noel Chance’s runner suffered his only defeat on his debut over hurdles, but that came at a time when the stable’s runners were under a cloud. He has shown progressive form on his past four starts, twice winning here and putting up his best effort yet when trouncing October Mist by 13 lengths at Haydock last time. He bypassed a good opportunity in the valuable Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury in order to come here fresh and he can certainly not be ruled out.
Rooster Booster, owned by the locally-based Terry Warner, would be a hugely popular winner. The grey has not looked back since winning the County Hurdle here last year, his only defeat in five starts since then coming when he failed to last home over 2½ miles at Aintree. It is hard to believe that, at the age of nine, he can finally reach the top but if the ground turns soft he will be hard to keep out of the frame.
Irish hopes are pinned on the mare, Like-A-Butterfly, who landed some big bets when taking the Supreme Novices Hurdle last year. She was a lucky winner there, however, when handed victory by the last-flight fall of Adamant Approach, and while her battling defeat of Limestone Lad over two miles at Leopardstown in January showed a good attitude, she has more to do here if she is to emulate Flakey Dove and Dawn Run, the only mares to have won the Champion.
Last year’s winner, Hors La Loi III, has a fantastic record at the Festival, but has never come here in such poor form and it will be a surprise if he is able to gain a repeat success. Of those at bigger prices, Copeland and In Contrast both have claims on their best form. Copeland beat Rooster Booster and Intersky Falcon last season and is sure to come on for his reappearance effort when down the field in the Tote Gold Trophy, while In Contrast has an excellent record here and should be thereabouts if his tendency to hang left does not lose him too much ground.

Cowboy has a Champion look
Jonjo O'Neill has all the aces in challenge for hurdling crown
Ron Cox
Tuesday March 11, 2003
The Guardian
Rhinestone Cowboy and Intersky Falcon are Jonjo O'Neill's first runners in the Champion Hurdle. They can come home in that order today to reinforce the
ADVERTISEMENT
widely held view that the trainer's Jackdaws Castle yard will soon be challenging Martin Pipe's as the dominant force in jump racing.
The feature race on the Cheltenham Festival's opening day is short on up-and-coming hurdling stars, with the notable exception of the O'Neill pair. Rhinestone Cowboy has the world at his feet though Intersky Falcon has the form in the book.
Beaten just once in seven starts, and then in controversial circumstances in the Champion Bumper at last year's Festival, Rhinestone Cowboy has not been extended in winning his four races over hurdles.
Rarely has a novice moved with such ease through his races. And even when he made a mistake two out on his penultimate start, he was soon back on the bridle to win with contemptuous ease.
Last month's Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton was Rhinestone Cowboy's stiffest examination so far, but he rose to the occasion with another effortless display. The manner in which he cruised alongside Thisthatandtother going to the final flight marked him down as an exceptional talent.
His jockey Norman Williamson has kept us in the dark by winning hard held on the seven-year-old every time. Perhaps there is not as much in the locker as it appears, and this will be the first proper test of Rhinestone Cowboy's jumping ability. But provided his jumping holds up, his high cruising speed should carry him into a position to mount a serious challenge on the run to the final flight.
Novices have a good record in the Champion, and this season's crop received a shot in the arm when Self Defense ran Rooster Booster to half a length at Sandown. On his previous run Self Defense was 16 lengths behind Thisthatand tother, the novice treated with such disdain by Rhinestone Cowboy at Wincanton.
Rooster Booster is probably better judged on his earlier form here at Cheltenham, including a Bula Hurdle win over two of today's rivals in Landing Light and Marble Arch. But his form has surely levelled out now, and at nine years of age it is hard to see the grey becoming champion.
Intersky Falcon has no experience of Cheltenham, but there seems no reason why this versatile performer should not act on the course. He idled in front when winning the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, and looked value for more than the three lengths he had to spare over Santenay, whom he faces again today .
With no obvious front-runner in this field, Liam Cooper may have to lead on Intersky Falcon, who likes to be up with the pace. A quick jumper, in the Make A Stand mould, he has not yet stopped improving.
The form of last year's Champion does not bear close inspection and Hors La Loi III will have to improve on his three lengths defeat of Marble Arch if he is to follow up.
However, he has a great record at the Festival, having won the Supreme Novice Hurdle in 1999 and chased home Istabraq in the Champion 12 months later. His trainer James Fanshawe, also successful with Royal Gait here in 1992, felt Hors La Loi III was badly in need of the run when a well-beaten third to Rhinestone Cowboy at Wincanton.
The ground is the key to Like-A-Butterfly , who is best with plenty of give underfoot. She showed lots of character to beat Limestone Lad on her reappearance, albeit over a trip well short of the latter's best. But she was a lucky winner of the Supreme Hurdle last year when, on ground quicker than she is used to, she had just a neck to spare over Westender with In Contrast third.
Westender has a good record at the course and both he and Copeland , who beat Rooster Booster and Intersky Falcon last season, are lively outsiders from the Pipe stable.
Westender was giving 15lb when third to Flame Creek here in heavy ground on his only run this season. Noel Chance, Flame Creek's trainer, is adamant his horse will be better on a faster surface but he may well be found wanting in a race like today's where the emphasis will be on speed.
