Australia in threat to ban British-trained runners

THE future participation of British challengers in Australia was thrown into jeopardy on Tuesday when the country’s racing authorities dramatically raised the stakes in their battle with Betfair.

The authorities are calling for a total exclusion on British-trained runners from their showpiece events, including the Melbourne Cup, unless the betting exchange company is outlawed.

Banning runners from Britain contesting the Spring Carnival, for which there are five contenders from Britain this year, is said to be “a strong probabilityâ€
