Liberian refugees save the day


Liberia's Lone Star will be forced to use players from alocal refugee camp for their crucial African Nations Cup qualifying match against Guinea on Saturday.

The national squad were due to fly to Accra in Ghana on Friday but the Liberian FA called Ghana Airways to cancel the flight saying it had no money to pay for them.

The match was moved to Ghana because of ongoing civil war in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

The situation is an extraordinary turn around for ateam that only two years ago, with George Weah in their side, was on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup.

Only three national squad members have made it to Accra -Frank Seator, George Gebro and Alvin Kigh.

It now looks unlikely that any other members of Lone Star will be able to get to Ghana so team organisers have been forced to contact members of the local refugee camp's football team, the Budumburam XI to enlist their help.

While the Budumburan side have no international experience they do have some pedigree having drawn 2-2 with the defending Ghanaian champions Hearts of Oak last season.

Three months ago, the Liberian Sports Ministry announced that it had no money to fund the team because all government resources were being put into fighting the civil war.

Liberia are currently bottom of Group 2but with all four teams tied on 6points, only goal difference separates them from leaders Guinea.

Weah to Liberia's rescue
Liberian legend George Weah has come to the rescue of the cash-strapped national team.
Weah is preparing to pay for a $12,000 chartered flight to fly the Lone Star for their Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea in Accra on Saturday.

The bulk of the team is currently stranded at home in Monrovia, while three foreign-based players are in Ghana.

Liberia's FA had cancelled the Ghana Airways flight due to take the team from Monrovia to Accra because of lack of funds.

But all that will change under 24 hours before the game in Accra. Weah is currently seeking ways of transferring the money for the chartered plane.

Ghana Airways, who will supply the chartered aircraft, wants an advance payment. So Weah is making contacts in New York to settle the bill.

If the team are unable to make it to Accra in time, Liberia will be forced to use players at the Budumburan refugee camp.

Ghana-based refugees will play for Liberia

A plan by George Weah to airlift Liberia's national team to Ghana for their Nations Cup tie has failed.

Weah was prepared to pay $12,000 for a chartered flight to Ghana, as most members of the team are stranded in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

Only three foreign-based players are in Ghana.

Liberia's FA had cancelled an earlier Ghana Airways flight due to their inability to foot the bill.

On hearing the plight of the team, Weah sealed a deal with Whesua airlines, a Liberian concern, to fly the Lone Star to Ghana.

But the airline could not honour the deal, as it does not have landing rights in Ghana.

An alternative plan to resort to Ghana Airways also ended in disappointment, when confirmation of flight plans were not received by the Liberian Football Association.

Liberia will use players at the Budumburan refugee camp in Ghana for Saturday's tie.
