Burley's squad hit by huge number of withdrawals

Scotland boss George Burley will be without 10 key players for the international friendly with Japan.

A depleted Scotland squad travel to Yokohama on Saturday after their exit in the World Cup qualification stages.

With many senior players from Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers pulling out, Burley has been forced to call up a large number of uncapped players.

The squad have been rocked by injuries, including Birmingham striker James McFadden and Sheffield United defender Gary Naysmith.

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher and Spurs' Alan Hutton have also withdrawn from the squad, adding to a long list of absentees which also includes Kilmarnock striker Kevin Kyle.

Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney, Danny Fox, Kevin Thomson, Robert Snodgrass and Garry O'Connor also withdrew from Burley's original party.

Watford midfielder Don Cowie and Dundee United winger Craig Conway have been called up to face Japan in what could be seen as an ideal opportunity for Scotland's fringe players to break through.

Burley has also called upon Norwich midfielder Stephen Hughes after his impressive performances for the Canaries this term.

Stephen McManus could be handed the captain's armband in the absence of Fletcher, while Charlie Adam is expected to start up front.

Japan, who have already secured their World Cup qualification in Asia qualifying Group 1, will weigh up their options against a much-changed Scotland side.

Takeshi Okada's side will not want to risk injuries to key players with a tricky encounter against Togo in the Kirin Cup fast approaching.

Japan warmed up for the Scotland game with a 6-0 win over Hong Kong on Thursday in a final round qualifier for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

Australia's Oman Qualifier More Important Than Netherlands Friendly

The Socceroos boss is under no illusions as to the important of Australia's impending Asian Cup qualifier...

Pim Verbeek has labelled Australia’s Asian Cup Qualifier against Oman as a must-win clash, prioritizing it over the high-profile friendly against the Netherlands tomorrow (Saturday) evening.

The Socceroos will welcome the Dutch to the Sydney Football Stadium before doing the same to Oman on Wednesday evening in Melbourne.

"We like to win against the Netherlands, we have to win against Oman," Verbeek said at a pre-match press conference today.

"I'm going to play as strong [a team] as possible for Saturday's game - at least to start.

"During the game I will find out which players start to get tired or maybe which players I need to save for Wednesday's game, so that's a decision I have to make.

"They all look fit and some of them probably played a lot of games but they're all ready and I think we will start as strong as possible tomorrow evening."

Oman currently lead Australia’s Asian Cup Qualifying group after two matches, currently on four points after a being held to a scoreless draw at home to Indonesia before scoring an impressive away win over Kuwait.

Experienced French boss Claude Le Roy will know that a positive result in Melbourne would take his side a long way to securing a place in Qatar in 2011, with Oman set to face off against the Australians again in November.

With just one point from its opening two matches in the campaign so far – which included a home defeat against Kuwait – the Socceroos will need a victory to stay in the race for a top two finish in their group (which would assure qualification for the Asian Cup).

Verbeek now has the luxury of calling upon his European stars, having had to use an entirely A-League-based for the opening two matches.

He will be without Mark Bresciano though, who has been ruled out with injury and failed to fly to Australia for either match this week, while Scott McDonald remains a doubt for the Oman clash with a back complaint and is similarly yet to depart from Glasgow.

The return of Lucas Neill at the heart of Australia’s defence having finally joined a club is a welcome boost, though Verbeek is less certain about the first-team role that will be taken by Brett Emerton against the Dutch – though he insists the winger will be ready for Wednesday’s match.

He continued, "For us after nine months of injury with Brett it's no use to take any risks.

"He wants to play but I'm going to find out today on the training how he is, but he definitely will not play 90 minutes [against the Netherlands] but he will be ready for Wednesday's game."

Dutch sweating on Kuyt, Sneijder fitness

Dutch stars Dirk Kuyt and Wesley Sneijder remain in some doubt for Saturday night's friendly clash with the Socceroos at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Liverpool striker Kuyt and Inter Milan midfielder Sneijder returned to training with the squad in torrential rain at the SFS on Friday night, but coach Bert van Marwijk could not confirm if they would play.

Kuyt has been struggling with an ankle injury suffered against Chelsea in the English Premier League last weekend while Sneijder has the flu.

Defender Glenn Loovens is also in doubt with a calf injury and is considered unlikely to play.

Asked if the likes of Kuyt and Sniejder would be fit for the match, van Marwijk replied: "I don't know, we will see."

The loss of either player would be another blow for the sold-out clash, which has already been robbed of Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Nigel de Jong due to a combination of injuries and family commitments.

The Netherlands are expecting a tough match against a near-full strength Socceroos and will be out to protect an 11-game unbeaten streak which includes all eight of their European World Cup qualifiers.

"It's a serious game, it's a friendly game but there's a lot of prestige in this game also for the Australians," van Marwijk said of Saturday's match.

"I know the coach (Pim Verbeek), so I know how he thinks.

"So both coaches want it to be a serious.

"We have a good team now, we are doing well I think, the players are feeling good and they are ready to play."
