'Non credo di poter tornare ad alto livello', ha dichiarato Verkerk, 30 anni, alla tv pubblica olandese Nos. In carriera il tennista olandese, attualmente n.263 nel ranking Atp, ha vinto i tornei di Milano (2003) e di Amersfoort (2004). Verkerk raggiunse nell'autunno 2003 la 14/a posizione nella classifica mondiale, suo best ranking.
