NORWICH-born tennis ace Richard Bloomfield today promised to "fight to the death" in what will be the biggest test of his professional career.
The 20-year-old from Alpington is preparing to face Frenchman Anthony Dupuis, who is ranked 75 in the world, 337 places ahead of Bloomfield, in the first round of the men's singles at Wimbledon.
And it is a test Bloomfield is relishing as he sees the SW19 adventure as a springboard from which his career will hopefully reach new heights.
"My preparations are going pretty well and I've now had a day practising on the courts at Wimbledon," said Bloomfield, who has been soaking up the atmosphere at the All England Club through every pore.
"I will be sitting down with my coach, Pete Russell, over the next couple of days to talk strategy going into the game, but it is important that whatever we decide I play my own game."
Although Bloomfield expects the experience to dramatically increase his tennis learning curve, he is also determined to make his mark in the tournament, armed with the knowledge that he has already beaten world-class opposition this season.
Bloomfield is quietly confident about his chances, boosted earlier this month after defeating former Wimbledon semi-finalist and world number 66 Vladimir Voltschkov, of Belarus.
Bloomfield declared: "I am really looking forward to playing at Wimbledon and at 20 I think I am the fourth youngest player at the tournament, which means that there is not that much expectation being heaped on me.
"I am determined to do well and I always want to win and, make no mistake, I will fight to the death in all my games. I am not simply there to make up the numbers.
"This is my fist taste of a Grand Slam tournament and I want to make the most of it. I see it as a stepping stone in my career as my game continues to improve.
"There is always a chance that you could cause an upset as I showed beating Voltschkov, but I don't see myself breaking into the top 100 for at least a couple of years," he added.
Bloomfield hopes the home crowd will get behind all the British players as they look to make full use of the advantage playing on grass gives them with their South American or European counterparts so used to playing on hard courts.
"According to Tim Henman the courts are not playing as fast as in previous years, so it will have less of an effect, but it is still an advantage for the British players more used to the conditions," said Bloomfield. "There are more South Americans in the tournament this year whereas they gave it a miss last year.
"They must have seen Lleyton Hewitt win the tournament and decided that it is now easier to play and win from the baseline."
Bloomfield will also be in doubles action with his Cheshire-based partner Mark Hilton against Argentinian pairing Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez, seeded 13.

La Kuznetsova è praticamente fuori da un mese e mezzo, visto che dopo la sconfitta con la Shaughnessy al Roland Garros si è riposata fino a qui. Una sola partita per lei in carriera sull'erba, l'anno scorso perse al 2° turno delle quali dalla Tatarkova.
La quota mi sembra evidentemente errata, considerando perlomeno le condizioni d'arrivo sull'erba delle 2.
